GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. — One community college is making sure there's space to train future workers, as the aviation footprint continues to grow in Greensboro.
Guilford Technical Community College plays a big role in preparing those who work at big aviation names like: Boeing, Boom Supersonic, HAECO and more. As the industry grows, so does demand for training. This is why GTCC has plans for a new 100,000 square foot aviation facility.
The new build will be placed at the college's Cameron Campus location in Colfax, which is about five miles away from the airport.
College leaders said students who learn in the current Aviation II and Aviation III buildings will eventually move into the new location.
"We'll be able to increase our capacity because right now we have just over 400 students, we want to get to 600, 800, 1,000 students. So that building is key to helping us do that. So, we're working on that with the state and county officials and seeing how we can move forward," said GTCC President, Dr. Anthony Clarke.
HAECO, a company that fixes airplanes was one of the first to plant roots at Piedmont Triad International airport back in 1990, it has been partnering with GTCC to train employees for years. HEACO leaders' welcome news of the new build.
"I know that for some time they've been trying to get this project to completion, it's really exciting to see that. HAECO is planning on growing and as you know PTI is growing with all things aviation as well too. So, we're really excited to be able to not only continue to work with them on the programs we have now, but also try to expand some future programs. Then more than anything it's just more individuals that we will potentially be able to have a pull from," said HAECO Training Director, William Sclama.
Dr. Clarke said the college plans to start construction on the new building within the next six months or so.
