Greensboro holds off on short-term rental regulations

Greensboro City Council votes 8-0 to hold off on putting new rules on short-term rentals like Airbnb and VRBO into place.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — A crackdown on short-term rentals in Greensboro hit a delay.

Greensboro city council voted to push back new rules for properties like Airbnb and VRBO.

How short-term rentals are monitored has been a controversial topic in the city for months.  That's why city leaders decided to put more rules on rentals like Airbnb's.

But on Monday, the city council decided to push back when the new requirements will take effect by an extra four months.

The city said it's struggling to find the right people to help put all the new rules in place.

According to the city council agenda, the city needs more time to secure a third-party vendor to document the city's short-term rentals and put the new system in place.

So, they pushed the start date back to April 1.

Come April, these are some of the rules folks renting their property will have to follow.

  • The homeowner must live in Guilford County or adjacent to it. Before the ordinance updates, folks had to live in the home.
  • Zoning permits will be needed every year which was not previously required.
  • A third-party vendor will need to identify and monitor the city's short-term rentals.
  • It also limits the number of guests to two people per bedroom.

When the city discussed the changes in May it was met with opposition.

Renters were worried the regulations would impact how much money they could make.

On the other hand, folks who live in the Fisher Park neighborhood were concerned more homes would get bought and rented out changing the fabric of their community.

Mayor Nancy Vaughan said back in May that the new system will hold renters more accountable.

There are more than 600 short-term rentals throughout the city of Greensboro.

Greensboro voted unanimously to push back the start day to give their chosen vendor time to accurately document each property.
