How to deal with giving or asking for second chances

There are different kinds of situations in which someone might not give a second chance.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — We've all heard the saying, "Everyone deserves a second chance." But what happens when someone hurts you, and the idea of giving them another shot just feels off? This is what we're diving into this morning: understanding why some people shut the door on second chances.

It's pretty common not to give second chances for a variety of reasons. Everyone has boundaries, whether they voice them or not. When someone crosses a line, then trust is broken. Not everyone feels comfortable taking that risk again.

There are different kinds of situations in which someone might not give a second chance.

The continuum is cussing someone out, losing your temper, lying, cheating, being difficult, and backstabbing, to name a few reasons. Some people have been hurt in previous relationships and friendships, and when they see warning signs of bad behavior or experience it from you, they might quickly cut you out of their life. They don't want to put themselves in a position to be hurt, so they cut their losses.

If someone isn't giving you a second chance, no matter what you say, they may not change their mind. Here are a few tips on how to cope. First, take ownership of your mistake. When you apologize, make sure that you recognize what you said or did wrong, how it impacted them, and what you will do differently next time.

If they choose not to give you a second chance, you must respect their decision. Focus on learning from your mistakes and becoming a better person. If a new opportunity arises, you'll be ready to approach it differently.
