A man rushes to help after crash in Colfax

David Fisher said the crash sounded like an explosion on West Market Street.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — A good samaritan rushed to help after a car crash in Greensboro.

David Fisher said he didn't see the FedEx truck slam into a garbage truck but he heard it.

Once he saw what happened, he knew he had to do something.

"We heard a very loud, almost like an explosion, a big crash," Fisher said.

The crash happened on West Market Street in Colfax on Tuesday morning.

Fisher said he heard the loud crash as he was preparing for work across the street at Piedmont Spa and Pool Service.

He said he saw the FedEx driver stuck with a crushed leg.

"I tried pushing the dash out. I realized pretty quickly I couldn't do it on my own. As that thought rolled through my mind out of nowhere hands appeared and two other men were in the fight with me," Fisher said. "We were able to get him free."

Fisher and the two other good samaritans risked their lives to save the FedEx driver.

"He was awake and conscious just begging for someone to get him out," Fisher said. "It was a little spooky because you don't know if the vehicle is going to catch fire or not,"

Fisher doesn't see himself as a hero, but just a decent human being.

"I would want it for myself if I were in that situation," Fisher said.  "I hope someone would be willing to help. It seemed natural."

While on the scene, Fisher said the driver of the garbage truck appeared to be ok.

He said that based on what he saw it’ll be some time before the FedEx driver recovers.

"It crushed his knee. You could see the white bone there it was pretty rough," fisher said.  "I don’t know his name or what happened to him after but they soon after had him on the way to the hospital. "

Fisher said the swift action of paramedics and the two others who ran over to help shows there are still good people in the world.

"One of the gentlemen helping in the situation started to talk to him and reason with him," Fisher shared.  "And try to take his mind off of how severe it really was."

At this time, it's not clear what led up to the crash.

We are waiting to hear back from the police on that and an update on the FedEx driver's condition.
