GREENSBORO, N.C. — Homework and school seem to go hand-in-hand, But is it doing more harm than good? The National Education Association recommends a 10-minute per grade level rule for homework. Yet, studies show that many young children receive three times that amount.
Too much homework can lead to burnout, stress, and a decreased love for learning. Children need time for play, hanging out with friends, and rest to develop their cognitive and emotional skills. When they're overwhelmed with homework can negatively impact their overall well-being.
Children may feel overwhelmed, stressed, or resentful when they have too much homework. It can interfere with their social life, hobbies, and even sleep. This can lead to negative emotions and behaviors.
Here are suggestions for handling homework battles with your children. Create a consistent homework time and space. This can help reduce stress and confusion. Let your child know your expectations for finishing homework, including deadlines and quality. Encourage your child to take short breaks during homework sessions to avoid burnout. Understand your child's frustrations and
try to find solutions together. Acknowledge your child's efforts and achievements, no matter how small.
