How to address risky conversations about politics

Talking about the upcoming elections without offending someone can be challenging. We have advice to help you navigate those tough talks.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — We all know that politics can be a heated topic. It seems political chatter is everywhere today, from social media to the dinner table. So, how do we navigate these conversations without ending up in an argument? And what if you just want to avoid the chatter altogether?

The key to approaching political conversations is understanding the other person's perspective. The goal isn't to make them agree with you. Ask open-ended questions so you can better understand their perspective. Before you offer your opinion, ask yourself if it'll contribute anything productive to the conversation.

If the conversation gets heated, take a deep breath to calm yourself. You can acknowledge the tension and suggest a change of topic. If you don't want to talk about politics, be kind and direct by saying something like, "I can see that you're passionate about X, Y, Z. I don't want to talk about politics. Or, I don't want to have this conversation."
