Deciding on getting married

Blanca Cobb addresses the question and concerns that people need to think about before deciding on getting married.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Today is Decide To Be Married Day. This morning, Blanca Cobb, who has a master's degree in psychology, and I are talking about the big decision and what you should consider before tying the knot.

Here are everyday things that some people don't think about before getting married. First thing, the daily grind is an important consideration. Marriage is a partnership, which means sharing chores, cooking, and cleaning. Are you compatible when it comes to household responsibilities? Second, what happens when things go wrong? You can plan your lives together: where you'll live, how many children you'll have, and financial aspects. But what happens when things go wonky? Third, planning for health changes, particularly in the later years. If you're young or middle-aged, you might not think about what happens later in life. You'd be surprised how life can change when someone gets sick.

Some people let their emotions lead them. Love is more than just a feeling; it's a verb. It's about taking action and working together to create a marriage and life that you love. There will be challenging moments and tricky conversations, but it's how you show up for each other.

Even though there aren't any guarantees in marriage, here are a few signs that you're on the right track. You both are each other's priority. Yes, your families are important, but you two have a steady and firm foundation. You take the time to nurture your relationship. There's mutual respect. When you disagree, you handle conflict constructively, where you're respected and valued. You feel emotionally and physically safe and secure with each other. You trust each other with your feelings, doubts, and secrets.  What you tell your partner stays with your partner; they don't share it with others. They keep your confidence. You know that your partner has the best intentions for you.
