Impact of Charlotte Airport strike on other airports, connecting flights

Workers at Charlotte-Douglas Airport are on strike as the busiest travel season ramps up.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Charlotte-Douglas Internationa Airport is a hub for travelers from the Triad throughout the year, but especially for the holidays.

A travel expert weighed in our how to handle any possible disruptions from the service workers' strike at the Charlotte airport

The good news is the strike isn't having a real impact on holiday air travel as of Monday.

Delays are as they would be on a typical day.

While service workers push for what they're calling a livable wage, travel must continue for those planning to visit loved ones.

This week is already expected to set a travel record.

TSA expects to see more than 18 million people at airports.

That's 6% more than last year.

With airports jam-packed, a strike couldn't come at a worse time, but travel Agent Ginny Mauert said this isn't uncommon.

"These airport workers know they're trying to get the most attention and they're doing it because we have so many people traveling right now," Mauer said. "With the issues we've had with airlines whether it's strikes, weather, or a natural disaster and not enough employees, I think people are getting used to it."

Mauer said the Charlotte airport is ahead of the game.

She said since those who are striking are not airline employees but contracted cleaners, there's a minimal impact on travelers.

"Today we're only seeing about a 4% delay in flights which is like a typical day in the Charlotte Airport," Mauer said. "So the airport is on top of it and trying to bring in additional workers to cover those positions until it can be resolved but they see a quick resolution in store. "

At this point, it's not clear when the strike will end.

Experts don't anticipate this impacting other airports that connect in Charlotte, like PTI.

Mauer said the best way to prepare for the unexpected is to purchase travel insurance.

Also, try to book flights that leave early in the day.

That way if your flight is canceled you might be able to get on one later that day.
