Celebrating Mother's Day later in life

Blanca Cobb explains how grown children can celebrate mom even if they aren't still living in the same home.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — The relationship between adult children and their moms is a unique and cherished bond. But how do you show your love and appreciation when your mom is past the "breakfast in bed" stage of Mother's Day?

Moms want to know that they still matter to you even after you've left home and started your own life. They crave a connection to their adult children and want to be a part of your life. Part of loving mom is being patient with her with new things like technology. And loving mom is more than saying the words; it's showing her.

Some moms don't want to burden their children because they realize you're busy with your own life, such as your career or family. Moms want to hear from you and may not reach out as much because they don't want to be a bother. Even though mom might seem to be doing okay living her life, almost nothing makes her happier than hearing from or seeing her adult children.

There are different ways that adult children can show their love to their moms. When you're with Mom, give her your full attention and put your phone away. She has stolen moments with you anyway, so make each one count. It's not enough to be in the same room together, so talk with her. Spend time doing fun things together and helping her with things like cooking.
