Boredom's impact on kids during the summer

Blanca Cobb explains why kids get bored and how it effects them. Plus how to fight it.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — July is National Anti-Boredom Month; we're talking about kids. School's out, and summer's in, so some kids might get bored. But is that really a bad thing?

Kids get bored because they need stimulation and new experiences. But sometimes, they lose interest in their activities, and that's when boredom sets in.

Boredom isn't necessarily bad for kids. Boredom can be pretty beneficial. It sparks creativity. When kids are left to their own devices, they're put in a position where they have to use their imaginations to come up with new ways to play. It also helps them develop problem-solving skills. When figuring out how to entertain themselves, they learn to overcome challenges and think independently.

Parents can help their kids deal with boredom by letting them be bored. You don't have to be their event planner and have every second of their day scheduled. Give your kids toys, art supplies, dress-up clothes, books, and games to help them entertain themselves. Encourage them to explore ideas.
