How your body posture contributes to your success

Body language expert, Blanca Cobb, helps viewers heighten their confidence at the start of a new year.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — With the new year comes new beginnings, like looking for a new job or meeting new people. Sometimes, it's more than what you say that can help you make a connection or lasting impression. We're talking about body language.

When it comes to meeting new people, posture is often overlooked. Your posture can send a message of whether you're a confident person. For example, you want to make sure that you have your shoulders back and back straight when saying hello or shaking hands. People tend to like confident people.

Body orientation can make a difference in an interview. When directly facing the interviewer, you send a message that you're engaged, interested, and focused on them and the conversation. If you turn away from the interviewer, then you're signaling negativity.

When it comes to eye contact, too much can have a negative impact.

Eye contact conveys interest and confidence. However, too much eye contact can come across as creepy. So, make sure that your gaze is neutral. And remember that you can look away or around occasionally during a conversation.
