GREENSBORO, N.C. — Ever found yourself running late for an appointment, a meeting, or even a date? You're not alone.
Today, we're celebrating National Be Late for Something Day. But is it ever okay to be late? And why do we tend to run late?
It's best to be on time, but there are certain circumstances where a slight delay is understandable. For example, if you're dealing with an emergency, such as a car breakdown, a family crisis, or a sick child. It's also acceptable to be a few minutes late if there's been a significant traffic jam. However, telling the other person is important if you know you'll be late. A simple text or phone call can go a long way in avoiding misunderstandings.
If someone calls you out for being late, remaining calm and respectful is important. An apology can go a long way. You could say something like, "I'm sorry for being late. I had an unexpected delay." It's also helpful to offer a brief explanation but avoid making excuses. If possible, try to focus on the future and how you'll ensure it doesn't happen again.
Dealing with someone else's tardiness can be frustrating. However, it's important to try to keep calm. If you're annoyed, take a deep breath and remind yourself that it's not the end of the world. If the person is consistently late, talking with them about the importance of punctuality might be necessary. Be direct but respectful.
