GREENSBORO, N.C. — Friday, May 24, is National Lucky Penny Day. There's a common belief that "If you see a penny, pick it up. All day long, you'll have good luck." This morning, we're talking about the humble penny and the good fortune it represents.
Many ancient cultures, like the Egyptians and Celts, saw metals as gifts from the gods or spirits of the earth. Some people believe that finding a penny brings good luck. Being small and made of copper, pennies might have been especially lucky because copper was a valuable metal used in early tools and currency.
Some people might say they make their luck by working hard. Luck is often about opportunity-meeting preparation. The harder you work and the more prepared you are, the more likely you are to be in the right place at the right time to seize an opportunity.
A big misconception is that luck is entirely random. While there's something to chance, you can influence your luck by staying positive, being open to new experiences, and being kind to others. After all, good deeds often have a way of coming back around.
