HPU hosts UNC Asheville tennis teams following Helene

High Point University is giving UNC Asheville tennis players a place to stay, food, and access to practice facilities after Helene wrecked their campus.

HIGH POINT, N.C. — A Triad university is lending a helping hand to fellow college students impacted by Hurricane Helene.

High Point University is hosting UNC Asheville's tennis teams who are rebounding from the historic storm.

"It was a scary 48 hours and definitely a scary 24," exclaimed UNC Asheville men's tennis coach, Matt Frost.

Players didn't think the storm would interrupt college living as much as it has.

"We were up in our dorms, woke up, and there was no electricity, no Wi-Fi, no water," recalled UNC Asheville tennis player, Tarek Erlewein.

The coaches were unable to reach their teams, many of which are underclassmen and international.

"I felt pretty useless, that's true. We're so used to being able to see them every day, check in, all that stuff that we take for granted," said Frost.

When the women's coach finally made it to campus, she was proud to find her girls taking care of each other.

"Being on campus they were actually leaving notes for each other, leaving letters for each other outside their dorm rooms and that was the way they actually kept in touch," said UNC Asheville's women's tennis coach, Lise Gregory.

Asheville and the university are now rebuilding and even though classes aren't back yet, the tennis team is rallying again.

"It was really sweet on Monday when we all met here, just how excited the girls were, how excited the team was to be back together to get to train again and do what they love," said Gregory.

HPU said the tennis teams will be on their campus for at least two weeks. Asheville coaches said classes will start back online at the end of the month.
