SOUTH CAROLINA, USA — Two more monkeys that escaped from a South Carolina medical research lab last week have been found and safely recovered, bringing the total returned to the facility to 32, according to the Yemassee Police Department and Alpha Genesis CEO Greg Westergaard.
Eleven primates remain on the loose. The lab said many of them have been sighted "close to the traps and in the woods adjacent to the facility, they have been heard cooing back and forth to each other."
Westergaard said both monkeys found were in good condition and were eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for dinner.
The Yemassee Police Department shared the following message:
"Efforts to safely capture the remaining primates will continue throughout the evening. We kindly ask the public to continue avoiding the area and to refrain from using drones near the facility. We sincerely appreciate the community's ongoing patience and concern during this time."
On Wednesday last week, 43 monkeys made a break for it and escaped the South Carolina facility. All 43 were Rhesus macaques, which are widely used for medical and biological research because they share many anatomic similarities with humans.
