Time Management Q & A

Anchor: You can't add time to your day, but, Eric, you say we can all certainly spend the time we have more productively. How?

Eric: Today, we live in a 24/7/365 world where it is hard to determine when work starts and ends. We are also a mobile workforce where we may work from an office, home, hotel room, airport, park, library, etc.

First, realize you cannot do it all. It is important to delegate work appropriately. When delegating, it is imperative that the best managers ensure the work is done correctly. Reducing your workload will help you. Giving a project/assignment to another team member will help build his or her self-confidence while improving the team’s overall morale. Admit that others are capable and can handle certain tasks that you are currently doing on a daily or weekly basis.

Anchor: Next, you’re an advocate of having a plan of action, correct?

Eric: it’s imperative. You can make a list of your assignments. Rank them in terms of importance. You can then focus on the urgent and critical tasks. In addition, set a time (an hour, a day, etc.) that you feel it will take for you to complete that task. Hold yourself accountable.

Anchor: You’ve found there are tracking tools that can keep you in line. Tell us about that.

Eric: Just like there are apps to analyze how you spend your money or who you communicate most with on your cell phone, you can also use a tracking tool. One type of time tracking software is Hubstaff. Time tracking software allows you to monitor projects or types of work such as “web development” and “networking event”. By having multiple projects, it allows for more detailed reporting.
