Triad charity proves that every little bit helps

Samaritan Ministries is running its "Penny Campaign" again for the holidays.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Pennies. Probably the most forgotten of all coins or money for that matter but as they used to say, it all adds up.  That's the reasoning behind Samaritan Ministries' annual Penny Campaign.

"The penny campaign dates back 33 years ago as a way for the entire community to feed hungry people and shelter those who are homeless." said director Jan Kelly, "Everyone can help out by either collecting pocket change the old-fashioned way in a jar like this or people can go online to our website and give online or do what some do which is to go online and start their campaign with friends to donate all that change."

All these proceeds go to the daily mission of Samaritan Ministries who help others in so many ways.

"Samaritan Ministries is about providing food, shelter, and hope through Christian love," continued Kelly, "We do this through three main programs. We have a community soup kitchen that provides over 100 thousand meals every year. Our claim to fame with the soup kitchen is that we have served lunch every single day since it began in 1981. That's over 15,000 days in a row."

They also have a 70-person shelter for men experiencing homelessness and a recovery plan for homeless men.
