GREENSBORO, N.C. — This year WFMY News 2 turns 75! So to celebrate we're opening the WFMY News 2 vault.
On February 11, 1960, 26 High Point High School students followed the example set in Greensboro days earlier.
They held a sit in and became known as the "Woolworth 26."
On this day in 2022, the city of High Point held a ceremony honoring the 26.
Back in 1960, the 26 students went into the Woolworth and looked around as if they were going to buy something.
When they received a signal, they sat at the whites only counter and started doing their homework.
They stayed until the store closed early.
This became the first civil rights sit-in led by high school students.
