WFMY75 Where are they now: Frank Mickens

As WFMY News 2 celebrates turning 75, we're catching up with some of the personalities who helped make WFMY News 2 what it is.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — In less than a week, WFMY News 2 turns 75. Over the course of this week, we're catching up with some of the people who you might remember bringing you the news. Today, we sat down to catch up with former reporter and anchor Frank Mickens.

Before coming to work at WFMY News 2, Mickens knew nothing about Greensboro. He said, "Came here, had never come to Greensboro in my life. The only thing I knew was the Greensboro Coliseum because I was a big sports fan." Once he arrived, one of the first things he noticed, as the hospitality, in WFMY and in the community. Mickens said, "People just kind of took care of each other here. It was more than a workplace." When he looks back on his time at WFMY News 2, he recalled that many of his family milestones occurred while he worked here. He got married while working at WFMY. They had their first kids while working at WFMY. He said, "So when I look back on my time at WFMY, I look at it as family."

In terms of stories he covered, he said, "I remember interviewing Tiger Woods. I remember being in the same room with Michael Jordan. I remember when Barack Obama was running for president the first time and I'm thinking this is the best job on the planet."

When asked to reflect on his time at WFMY News 2, Mickens said, "When I think about WFMY, I think about community. I think we have been so diligent, committed, and passionate about changing lives for the better."

He also shared a special thought for the viewers. "This is not my hometown, but we have built a life here and a lot of it has to do with the viewers. I can't say enough, thank you to every single person who's ever seen or said anything nice about this station. It didn't just feed our families, but it actually made us feel like we were doing something that was valuable and that's important. So, thanks a lot for that."

Mickens briefly moved to Indiana after leaving WFMY News 2. He and his family are now back in the Triad. In 2020, Mickens came out of television news and went into full time gospel ministry. He now preaches the gospel of Jesus Christ here in the area and in nations all over the world. For more information on FaithFire World Wide Revival Ministries, click here.
