Where are they now? WFMY reporter, anchor Doug Allred | WFMY75

As WFMY News 2 turns 75, we're catching up with former members of the WFMY News 2 team.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — In less than a week, WFMY News 2 turns 75. Over the course of this week, we're catching up with some of the people who you might remember bringing you the news! Today, we go back to the 90s and catch up with former Good Morning Show reporter and anchor Doug Allred.

Doug started at WFMY News 2 as a member of the Good Morning Show in 1990. He was on the Good Morning Show with Lee Kinard, Tracy Wilson, and Ed Matthews. During his 10 years at WFMY, he also anchored the weekend morning show, and evening newscasts. As he talked about his time on the Good Morning Show, Doug says Lee Kinard was ahead of his time. "Lee Kinard was the godfather of social media. [...]
Well, his concept was, you know, we're a community and let's bring everybody in the community together to talk about what's going on in the community."

When asked if there was anything specific that he remembered about his time at WFMY, Doug said it had to be the people he worked with. "I mean, there are lots of behind the scene folks and we were all friends. The, the fun thing was the, the Good Morning Show because, you know, we, we got there at 0-dark-30, the bosses and the leaders, they weren't around, you know, so it was up to us and we just did our thing. We had amazing amount of fun."

Allred said working at WFMY showed him how much people truly care about their community. "We had people, like I told you, from all walks of life coming in there. These were people doing things for their church, their school, their community and, you know, they were doing it because they wanna make the place they live better. It's, it's really, really refreshing to see or to remember that people can come together, you know, they, they can come together and it may not be over huge, big issues, but it's over the things that are often more important."

When Allred left WFMY News 2, he didn't go far! He took the skills he developed and now does a different type of story-telling. He's the external communications manager, telling stories for Cone Health.

We'll be celebrating 75 a little more this week. We're catching up with some familiar faces and celebrating other businesses turning 75. Don't miss it!

Of course, this weekend we want you to celebrate 75 years with us! Sunday, August 18th, we'll be at Triad Park from 2:00pm - 4:00pm for a party! There will be food trucks, a performance from Eric and the Chill Tones, and, of course, members of the WFMY News 2 team! We hope to see you there.
