On January 18, 1972, Alfreda Webb was sworn in as the first Black woman to serve in the NC General Assembly.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — To celebrate WFMY News 2 turning 75, we are opening the News 2 Vault.

On January 18, 1972, Alfreda Webb was sworn in as the first Black woman to serve in the North Carolina General Assembly.

She was appointed to the House of Representatives to fill an unexpired term but never actively served in the General Assembly.

But that's not all Webb did.

She was also the First Black American woman to earn a bachelor's degree in veterinary medicine, and one of the first two black American women to become a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine.

She served as a professor of biology and mathematics at North Carolina A&T.
