Vault Visit | How WFMY News 2 went live on TV for the first time

Have you heard the story of how we went on the air? It wasn't necessarily a smooth process!

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Today, on Aug. 18, WFMY News 2 turns 75! So to celebrate... We're opening the WFMY News 2 vault.

Have you heard the story of how we went on the air? It wasn't necessarily a smooth process!

"So we got all ready and we gave Don the cue to start talking. We immediately put him on the air. You could see Don. You could see his mouth moving, but we didn't have any sound. So we stopped and started over again... we went back to slide and got all ready and we cued him again and we found we had the wrong microphone or something to this effect. We cued him again and up came Don, beautiful picture, mouth moving, but no sound, and about that time, Don was getting a little unhappy with the situation too, and just as the audio man found the correct switch and threw the switch, we heard on the air - the first words - Judas Priest - and this was something - Hardison - he was unhappy, but after that things ran pretty smooth."

WFMY News 2's first broadcast was on the air for four minutes and 25 seconds.

We were the second TV station in the state and the 76th in the country to broadcast live.

Lee Kinard started the Good Morning Show in 1957.

It was the first news morning show in the country.

The equipment changed... The faces changed... But one thing has never changed in our 75 years.

That's our commitment to you -- our viewers, our community.

Thank you for trusting us.
