DAVIDSON COUNTY, N.C. — WFMY News 2 is turning 75 this year and to celebrate, we are opening the News 2 Vault.
Today was a day several people on I-85 won't soon forget.
On February 16, 2022, a plane crashed into a tractor-trailer and created a giant fireball on I-85.
Officials say the pilot, Raymond John Ackley, tried taking off from the Lexington-Davidson County airport before crashing into the truck.
Ackley died at the scene. The truck driver suffered minor injuries.
Highway patrol said they believe the plane experienced a mechanical issue.
