Vault Visit | Pile of cars starts Kernersville scrap yard fire

On April 12, 2002, Kernersville fire crews started their day fighting a large unusual fire.

KERNERSVILLE, N.C. — To celebrate WFMY News 2 turning 75 this year, we are opening the News 2 vault.

On April 12, 2002, Kernersville fire crews started their day fighting a large, unusual fire.

It started around 4:30 at a Kernersville scrap yard. A pile of cars that had been crushed and ground caught fire.

So, seats, dashboards, and rubber hoses burned, creating a white cloud of smoke and a unique smell in the area. Fire crews had trouble with the water supply near West Mountain Street, so they called tankers to help extinguish the flames.

Thankfully, no one was hurt.
