Vault Visit | Confiscated goods auctioned off

On January 24, 1992, U.S. Marshalls hosted an auction of items owned by Grady Mitchell.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — To celebrate WFMY News 2 turning 75, we are opening the WFMY News 2 Vault.

On Wednesday, we're going back to 1992 and a scene that could have been part of a movie!

U.S. Marshalls hosted an auction of items owned by Grady Mitchell. He was in custody for laundering money for a drug organization.

So, agents seized hundreds of thousands of dollars of his property from locations around the Triad.

He had 20 tractors, 30 refrigerated trailers, multiple cars, and more. Mitchell hadn't been charged but federal law let seized property be sold before a verdict.

Eventually, Mitchell pled guilty to ten counts of using a trucking company and its assets as a cover and conduit to facilitate a conspiracy to possess drugs, launder money, and transport stolen cars in interstate commerce.
