Vault Visit | 4 killed in Campus Walk apartment fire

On February 15, 2002, officials say Janet Danahey set her ex-boyfriend's balcony on fire to get back at him.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — This year WFMY News 2 turns 75 and to celebrate, we are opening the News 2 Vault.

A fire in the early morning hours of February 15 changed dozens of lives forever.

Officials say Janet Danahey set her ex-boyfriend's balcony on fire to get back at him. But the fire spread and engulfed the entire building.

"We were woken up by neighbors who were beating on the doors telling us to get out of the apartment they broke the windows and set alarms off," Crystal Kellam said.

Four people, sisters Rachel and Donna Lew-Ellyn, Elizabeth Harris, and Ryan Bek, died.

Many others were injured.

Danahey was sentenced to life in prison without parole. Former North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory commuted her sentence. She was denied parole in November.

She can apply for parole again in 2026.
