Vault Visit | Chatting with Fred Neal and the Harlem Globetrotters

On March 1, 1971, we talked about Greensboro native Fred 'Curly' Neal and the Harlem Globetrotters.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — WFMY News 2 turns 75 this year and to celebrate, we are opening the News 2 Vault.

On March 1, 1971, we were talking about the Harlem Globetrotters!

Greensboro native, Fred "Curly" Neal, was in his 7th year with the Globetrotters and was definitely a fan favorite.

"I had the opportunity to be Curly's first coach with the Harlem Globetrotters and I must say he's one of the finest we've had in our 45 years of existence, and I know he's anxious to come home this year as he has been a year in the past," Globetrotters Head Coach, Bobby Milton said.

Neal played 22 seasons for the team, playing approximately 6,000 games in 97 countries.

The Globetrotters retired Neal's jersey in 2008. That's the same year he was inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame.

Neal died on March 26, 2020, at 77 years old.
