Vault Visit | Tennis champion Arthur Ashe dies

On Feb. 6, 1993, Arthur Ashe died from an AIDS-related illness. He was 49.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — WFMY News 2 is turning 75 this year and to celebrate we are opening the News 2 Vault. 

On Feb. 6, 1993, the world lost tennis champion Arthur Ashe. 

Ashe was the first black player selected to the United States Davis Cup Team. He still is the only black man to ever win singles titles at Wimbledon the U.S. Open and the Australian Open. 

Over his career, he won three grand slam singles titles and two doubles titles. 

In 1983, Ashe contracted HIV from a blood transfusion. In 1992, he helped raise awareness about aids and its victims. 

Ashe died from AIDS-related pneumonia. He was 49 years old.
