Vault Visit: WFMY News 2 travels to Newland for a Christmas tree check-in

In 1994, we visited Doug Clark Nursery, where more than a million trees would be shipped out.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — This year, WFMY News 2 turns 75! So to celebrate, we're opening the WFMY News 2 vault.

November 16, 1994, WFMY News 2 made a trip to the mountains.

Our crews traveled to Doug Clark Nursery in Newland.

We found people hard at work prepping trees for the holiday season. They were cutting from sun up to sun down.

By the end of the season, they would ship off more than a million trees! But that year, tall trees were in short supply.

“There's plenty of small trees, four to fives and five to sixes, but the six to sevens, seven to eights, eights to nines, nines to tens, you're talking about premiums.”

The shortage was due to a drought in 1986. So, people paid more for trees in 1994. But the tree farm owner advised people to shop around for a good price.
