WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — On June 6, 2014, WFMY News 2 teamed up with the Rotary District 7690 to mark the 70th anniversary of the D-Day invasion by sending some veterans on a special trip.
After a special send-off from Hanes Mall, the World War II veterans were on their way!
The 125 veterans took an all-expense paid trip to the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford, Virginia.
It was a time to honor, reflect, and remember the service and sacrifice made on June 6, 1944. The veterans spent the day with thousands of other veteran widows and family members for a day of special ceremonies.
Bedford, Virginia is the home of the National D-Day Memorial because no American community lost more soldiers per capita on D-Day than the small town of Bedford.
