Vault Visit | TV station applications swamp FCC

On July 2, 1952, hundreds of applications were sent to the Federal Communications Commission.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — This year, WFMY News 2 turns 75. To celebrate, we're opening the News 2 Vault.

TV was still in its beginning stages. WFMY News 2 had started, but other stations were trying to get off the ground.

Hundreds sent applications to the Federal Communications Commission. The files had to be checked and photocopied before processing. Then a team of lawyers, engineers, and technicians checked the applications and submitted reports on each phase.

Officials said this process was the start of action that would lead to 2,000 TV stations operating across the U.S.
