GREENSBORO, N.C. — This year WFMY News 2 turns 75! So to celebrate, we're opening the News 2 vault.
On Aug. 7 1977, Greensboro's downtown train depot was the center of attention. People gathered at the depot to see the "6-10."
It was one of the largest, most powerful steam engines ever built.
"It weights 100 tons more than the next largest now, the 4501, and it'll pull twice as much," An onlooker said. "We made about six or seven trips with it and quite frankly I haven't found a hill it won't climb or a train it won't pull."
The 610 was built in 1927 and retired in 1950. It sat in a museum for years. It was later restored and returned to operation.
