Vault Visit | Rush on silver certificates in 1968

In 1968, people were searching for silver certificates.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — To celebrate WFMY News 2 turning 75, we are opening the News 2 Vault.

We take you back to 1968 when some people searched for silver certificates.

Silver certificates had been issued as money in the 1800s. The certificate holder could redeem it for a certain amount of silver.

In 1928, they were redesigned to be the same shape and size as the current currency, but it said, "silver certificate."

So, on June 20, 1968, WFMY New 2 spoke to a man on a mission to collect silver certificates. Silver was 2.52 an ounce on the open market.

Changing dollars for silver certificates was a sure way to make fast money. The government was going to stop redeeming silver certificates the following week.

These certificates no longer carry monetary value as an exchange for silver. But they're still legal tender at their face value.
