WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — WFMY News 2 turned 75 this year and to celebrate, we are opening the News 2 Vault.

On August 27, 1998, a massive fire destroyed part of the RJR Warehouse Complex in downtown Winston-Salem.

The RJR warehouse was more than 100 years old when the fire started. The building was under construction in downtown Winston-Salem. Officials say a welder's torch sparked on a pile of debris.

The fire destroyed three of the four buildings being renovated.

The renovation was part of a 12-acre, six-block plan to create a research and technology park.

The smoke from the fire also led officials to evacuate the nearby Forsyth County Jail. Officials loaded more than 700 inmates onto buses and took them to the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum until it was safe to return later that day.
