Vault Visit | Barack Obama elected president in 2008

November 4, 2008, was a historic Election Day for America.

NORTH CAROLINA, USA — WFMY News 2 turned 75 this year and to celebrate, we are opening the News 2 Vault.

November 4, 2008, was a historic Election Day for America.

After a contentious campaign against Senator John McCain, Barack Obama was elected the nation's 44th president. With his win, he became the first Black President in our nation's history.

In his win, Obama received more votes than any candidate in history to that date. WFMY News 2 watched the results come in with North Carolina A&T students. Their celebration spilled out of campus buildings bringing people together to celebrate the historic victory in the rain.

Of course, Obama served a second term beating Mitt Romney in 2012.
