Vault Visit | NC A&T guest speaker against integration

Conversations about integration were very common in 1968.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — To honor WFMY News 2 turning 75 this year, we are opening the News 2 Vault.

On August 1, 1968, conversations about integration were very common. But on that day, WFMY News 2 spoke with a man with an opinion some considered uncommon.

"Black people were never going to be freed in an integrated school setting because it is not the task of white teachers and white administration to free black children," said noted educator Dr. Donald Hugh Smith.

He spoke as part of a lecture series at North Carolina A&T.

Smith's position was that integration should never have been the goal of civil rights leaders. He said the goal should have been an open society where people could choose what they want to do.
