Vault Visit | NC driver's licenses get pictures in 1968

The North Carolina DMV was making changes to driver's licenses.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — To celebrate WFMY News 2 turning 75 this year, we are opening the News 2 Vault.

On June 21, 1968, the North Carolina DMV was making changes to driver's licenses.

"North Carolina has put the operator's picture on his driver's license. By way of machines such as this, all new, renewal, or duplicate driver's licenses are more than just a name or a number. sealed in plastic is the information, restrictions, and a color photograph."

Fast forward to the present day and the state is making more changes to driver's licenses to make them more secure.

New cards will be personalized with laser engraving technology. They will also be made of a different material, that means it will feel and sound different.
