Vault Visit | Legal action on Lexington confederate monument

On this day 4 years ago, the debate over a Confederate monument in Lexington goes from the streets to a courtroom.

LEXINGTON, N.C. — To celebrate WFMY News 2 turning 75, we are opening the News 2 Vault.

August 13, 2020, the debate over a Confederate monument in Lexington goes from the streets to a courtroom.

The memorial to the Davidson County men who died in the Civil War had been there for over a hundred years. But in 2020, people started pushing for the statue's removal.

The city of Lexington filed a lawsuit.

In a statement, Davidson County officials said the threat didn't meet the law's exceptions. But the city's attorney said moving the statue would not violate the state law protecting such statues.

Two months later, the city settled with the 'United Daughters of the Confederacy' who owned the statue. They agreed it would be moved out of Lexington city limits at the city's expense.
