Vault Visit | Inventor Demonstrates Machine Gun in 1977

WFMY News 2 accompanied a local inventor on a trip to Maryland in 1977.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — WFMY is turning 75 this year! We're opening the News 2 Vault to celebrate.

On July 5, 1977, WFMY followed a local inventor on a trip to Maryland where inventor L.E. Lisk traveled to fire his machine gun for the military.

Lisk was notable for creating the LEL 1 Rapid Fire Machine Gun with David "Carbine" Williams. He said the gun was able to fire 2,700 rounds a minute,

For comparison, an Uzi, invented around the same time, can shoot about 800 rounds a minute. Lisks' gun was three times faster than the primary gun used by the military at the time.

Because of the gun's success, Lisk brought his invention back to Maryland for officials to see it in action. They said they'd get back to him in a week.

He never heard back.
