Vault Visit | Historic campaign in Raleigh during 1968 Presidential Election

October 8, 1968, people in Raleigh were still buzzing over a campaign visit.

RALEIGH, N.C. — This year WFMY News 2 turned 75!  So to celebrate, we're opening the WFMY News 2 vault.

On October 8, 1968, people in Raleigh were still buzzing over a campaign visit.

Spiro Agnew spoke to crowds in Downtown Raleigh the day before.

He spoke to crowds as the vice presidential candidate telling the crowds about his running mate -- Richard Nixon.

“What Dick Nixon wants to do is not just use the executive branch of the government but to carry into office with him a Republican Congress that will be truly responsive to bringing about the changes that need to be made in this country.”

Of course, Nixon and Agnew went on to win the election of 1968.

They defeated Hubert Humphrey and Edmund Muskie.

The popular vote was extremely close, but the electoral vote showed more distance.
