Vault Visit: Descendants of freed slaves hold annual reunion

The family got their names from the "Hairston" family, who owned almost 10,000 slaves.

Last week WFMY News 2 turned 75! So to celebrate, we're opening the News 2 vault.

On Aug. 28, 1975 we covered a family reunion that was quite unique! Lets start with a little history.

According to reports, the Hairston family owned nearly 40 plantations and almost 10,000 slaves across the south.

When the slaves were freed many of them took the Hairston name.

As time went on, black Hairstons from across the country united and committed to the annual "Hairston-clan" reunions.

By Aug. 1971, hundreds attended the reunions each year.

"We decided we would get together other than having death in the family. After we got together, people seemed to be interested in it," said a member of the family.

The family held their 50th reunion in 2023.

According to the family Facebook page, this year's reunion was postponed. They'll meet again next year in Danville.
