Vault Visit | Annual Hairston family reunion

On August 28, 1975, we covered a unique family reunion!

GREENSBORO, N.C. — WFMY News 2 turned 75 this year, and we've been celebrating by opening the News 2 Vault.

On August 28, 1975, we covered a unique family reunion!

Here's a little history: According to reports, the Hairston family owned nearly 40 plantations and almost 10,000 slaves across the South.

When the slaves were free, many took the name Hairston.

As time went on, some Hairstons met and realized they were related and committed to reuniting. So, in August 1971, people from all over the country came to Lexington for the annual Hairston reunion. By this point, it was already a regular occurrence with hundreds attending each year.

The family members were committed to keeping it going. They held their 50th reunion in 2023.

According to the family's Facebook page, this year's reunion was postponed but they'll meet again next year in Danville.
