Vault Visit | Greensboro city leaders consider smoking ban

On Jan. 11, 2007, Greensboro city leaders were discussing whether or not to ban smoking inside city-owned buildings.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — As we celebrate WFMY News 2 turning 75 this year, we are celebrating by opening the WFMY News 2 Vault.

On Jan. 11, we're going back to 2007 and a discussion about a smoking ban.

Greensboro city leaders were discussing whether or not to ban smoking inside city-owned buildings.

At that time, state and local government buildings had to have designated smoking areas. But Mayor Keith Holliday and others wanted to ban it inside buildings completely.

"I don't think anyone is saying let's make a public privacy to stop smoking, I'm just saying, let's limit the areas where smoking can be," Mayor Holliday said.

Since local government couldn't pass laws stricter than state laws, Greensboro waited for a state law to be passed to make the change.
