Vault Visit: Greensboro businesses fight shoplifting

On November 8, 1971, Greensboro businesses were trying to solve a problem.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — This year, WFMY News 2 turns 75! So we're opening the WFMY News 2 vault.

November 8, 1971, Greensboro businesses were trying to solve a problem.

“Because of the terrible increase in the amount of shoplifting, not only here in Greensboro but throughout all of the United States, the cost of goods and services has gone up.”

A number of merchant, city government, civic, and youth leaders met to discuss shoplifting.

They wanted to get everyone involved in launching an anti-shoplifting campaign. Their goal was to spread the message that shoplifting impacts everyone.

They also wanted to let people know that people who get caught shoplifting would also carry a record.

The campaign message: "Everyone wants to be wanted, but not for theft."
