Vault Visit | Greensboro almost loses Amtrak service

The Crescent, the train that came through Greensboro, was almost on a federal hit list because of low ridership.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — This year WFMY News 2 turns 75!  So to celebrate, we're opening the WFMY News 2 vault.

May 29, 1979--a story about a potential change to Greensboro transportation.

"In the long run, on trains, I think it's like the post office in this country. We have got to make up our minds whether we want good train service and whether we want good post office service, and if we do, we'll have to do what every country in the world does and subsidize them."

That was Congressman Richardson Preyer.

He spoke about transportation because Greensboro almost lost its Amtrak stop.

The Crescent, the train that came through Greensboro, was almost on a federal hit list because of low ridership.

But the government adjusted Amtrak's funding and ridership slowly increased, so the Crescent stayed.
