Vault Visit | First Day of School in 1971

On August 26, 1971, students went back to school.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — WFMY News 2 turned 75 this year and to celebrate, we are opening the News 2 Vault.

Today is the first day of school in 2024 and it was also the first day of school on August 26, 1971. That was also the first desegregated school year at Dudley High School.

Busing from other areas meant the school now had a 50/50 racial makeup.

WFMY News 2 Reporter Kay Miller said she spoke with students about the changes.

"One white boy from Page said he'd rather be there, other whites said being at Dudley was fine. Blacks said having whites at the school didn't bother them. I'm here to learn one black senior told me and I expect to have a good year," Miller said.

There were no issues at Dudley that day. However, a group of elementary school parents did protest about the freedom of choice school plan.
