WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — To celebrate WFMY News 2 turning 75, we are opening the News 2 Vault.

On June 19, 2011, a Triad church held a Juneteenth celebration with a celebrity speaker.

Dr. Maya Angelou was the keynote speaker for the Juneteenth service at Union Baptist Church in Winston-Salem.

Juneteenth marks when slaves in Texas found out they'd been freed by the Emancipation Proclamation two years after it had been signed. That day, Angelou spoke about Juneteenth and its modern-day relevance.

While many black Americans had celebrated it for years, it wasn't a federal holiday until 2021 when President Joe Biden made it an official holiday.
