Vault Visit: Dale Earnhardt dies in Daytona 500 crash

Racing legend Dale Earnhardt died from a crash during the Daytona 500.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — This year WFMY News 2 turns 75! 

So to celebrate, we're opening the News 2 vault.

Sunday, we remember a day that changed the face of NASCAR forever.

February 18, 2001, 49-year-old racing legend Dale Earnhardt died from a crash during the Daytona 500.

The crash happened on the last lap of the race.

Before his death, Earnhardt won seven championships and was one of the faces who helped bring NASCAR to the mainstream.

His death led the industry to make major safety changes including the development of safer barriers, head and neck restraints, and re-designed cars.
           

In his death, Dale Earnhardt's legacy lives on.
