CHARLOTTE, N.C. — As WFMY News 2 turns 75 this year, we are opening the News 2 Vault.
On this day in 2019, word had leaked that the political world would soon turn its focus to Charlotte.
The next day, officials announced that Charlotte would host the 2020 Republican National Convention (RNC).
Many people were optimistic about the selection since it would bring so many people to the city. Fundraising, recruiting, and security upgrades started happening almost immediately.
It had been six years since a national political convention came to North Carolina. Charlotte hosted the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in 2012.
For perspective, the 2012 DNC brought 164 million dollars to Charlotte and the 2016 RNC brought almost $200 million to Cleveland.
