Vault Visit | Panthers prep for first Super Bowl appearance in 2004

On January 31, 2004, the Carolina Panthers were set to face the New England Patriots in Super Bowl 38.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — To celebrate WFMY News 2 turning 75 this year, we are opening the News 2 Vault.

On Jan. 31, 2004, was all about Carolina Panthers!

The Panthers, their families, and fans were all in Houston getting ready to face the New England Patriots in Super Bowl 38.

WFMY News 2 crews found a bunch of excited Panthers fans shopping and getting ready for the big game.

The team was led by some big names, quarterback Jake Delhomme, wide receivers Steve Smith and Ricky Proehl, and defensive end Julius Peppers.

"The game hasn't been played yet. It's not over. We have to play this game. We're on the brink of destiny. It was destiny for us to be here, so they've got the dynasty, we've got the destiny, we're what adds up at the end,"

Unfortunately, after a close game, Patriots kicker Adam Vinatieri kicked the game-winning field goal as time expired. Patriots won their second Super Bowl, 32-29.
